DESCRIPTION: The Prince of Löwenstein estate is synonymous with excellent Franconian wines for generations. The grapes are produced in the best vineyards of the lower river Main. These are the places where the Cru Homburg "Kallmuth" was planted in the Middle Ages. Its dry walls, from 2 to 5 meters high, characterize the unique atmosphere of this terraced vineyard of 12 hectares, classified historical monument in 1981. Thanks to the geological and climatic peculiarities, with terrain that changes depending on the positions from calcareous to rock sandstone, wines with a strong personality and unique character are produced. The history of the family dates back to the year 1000 and has lived in the Franconian region since 1590. In 1597 the first vineyards were bought and the wine trade began that in those times played a key role in the economy. The Löwenstein family had long been an aristocratic family, owning lands along the River Main and the Odenwald, in Bohemia, in Lorraine and in the Palatinate, and in an area that in our day belongs to Belgium. During the German Empire the two exceptional vineyards of Hallgarten in the Rheingau and the monastic vineyard of Kallmuth in Franconia became part of the possessions. In 2010 the winery was moved to the historic Löwenstein Palace in Kleinheubach. Alongside the vineyards of Franconia are those owned by the Rheingau, purchased in 1871 by the great-grandmother of the present-day Prince of Löwenstein. Some of the best vineyards in the region are cultivated in Hallgarten; Hallgarten Schönhell (the name comes from ancient German and means "marvelous finale") is situated on deep soil, facing south, with high clay content. The old vines with deep roots give wines with a distinctly fruity bouquet. The production philosophy is oriented towards naturalness, respect for the territory and its conservation, key principles sustained with conviction by Stephanie, princess of Löwenstein, who currently directs family activities.
