A year later Elias Fernandez joined the winery as assistant winemaker. Together Doug and Elias worked hard to create the "style Shafer", synonymous with quality, consistency and elegance. Shafer Vineyards wine comes from grapes grown on the slopes of an amphitheater of volcanic rock, which receives every afternoon the cool breezes of the San Francisco Bay. "The constant heat helps to reach maturity, while the chill of the evening keeps the acidity - explains Doug Shafer - Meanwhile, the volcanic soil does not provide many nutrients and vineyards that produce grapes struggle to live with small berries, intense flavor ". The extensions of the vineyards of the estate is of 54 hectares, in the Stags Leap District. The variety grown is Cabernet Sauvignon
